W203 Subwoofer
I've been sitting on this info for a while but on the concept of 'better late than never' here goes: The sound system in W123 wagons is horrible. The speakers are small, odd shaped and the radios are lacking in 'modern features' like a CD player or mp3 capability. Sedans are only marginally better - simply because there is much more flexibility for replacing rear speakers.
Navigation DVD Player is specially designed to upgrade Mercedes-Benz C(W203)/CLK(W209) standard radio system or factory navigation system. It has the same harness and plug as original radio, totally plug and play when install. The Becker radios were usable when new but I haven't seen one in ages that has a working display. The faders are all dirty enough now that they need to be removed and cleaned or replaced. I'm not even going to mention the antennas. So I replaced the system in my 300TD and I did it while spending very little money. The first thing that I did was purchase a replacement radio. In my case I lucked upon a JBL CD player unit at Walmart for $27 on clearance.
I could have purchased it at MSRP and still come out happy. After I selected the radio I picked up two pairs of 4' Pioneer 2-way speakers.
I think that the model # is TS-G1041R. They run about $41 per pair at Walmart. The 4' speakers will mount in both the front and the rear of the wagon. You won't be using the same screw holes as the stock speakers, but since none of the speakers are exposed this won't ever show. The front speaker covers do fit over these 2-way speakers. The rears mount using the factory speaker brackets. For the last component I added a subwoofer.

Pioneer used to make a subwoofer that mounts inside of a spare tire. One model is the TS-WX50. I picked one up on E-Bay for about $25 shipped.
I'm not looking for a glass rattling system and this subwoofer doesn't produce that kind of sound. It did however fill in the lows nicely. The 4' front/rear speakers alone sound crisp but the sub completes it. I'll comment on wiring just a little bit. Do yourself a favor and bypass the factory fader. All new radios include a fader. I was able to put an extra switch in place of the fader to use for driving lights.
I connected the subwoofer to one of the rear channels. I know that this isn't idea and that I should have a balanced system and a small AMP for the sub. It does work well though and it produces nice sound. To finish things off I sold the old (broken) Becker for $60 on E-Bay. That helped to offset the cost. The bottom line is that I couldn't be happier.

That's good to know. How do they sound?
I've got a pair of them for the front but I haven't gotten the chance to install them because of the snow. I upgraded from the early 612 to a later 780, as well as replacing all the factory speakers with same size Pioneers. Combined with an FM Modulator (not transmitter), has given me a pretty good sound.
I don't think I would give up a properly operating Becker for the newer stuff that doesn't look all that nice in my option. I would however swap in a new Becker. I agree about the looks of the new head units, way to flashy, with too many bright neon lights and stuff.
I went with a Clarion thats a couple years old, and to me, other than a Nakamichi deck or a newer becker, it's the only one that really looks right. Apparently the 4' pioneers are a popular upgrade for the W123, I have a pair of them in my dash. -Nazrat, do you happen to have a picture of the way you mounted the subwoofer? Is it in the side panel where the spare tire is?
Did you cut a hole? -Adam, it's nice to know I'm not the only 17 year old on here who enjoys an older lifestyle LOL.
